Recommendations
just what I use myself and would recommend other people to use too
this is a really quick made & early write up, I plan to often go here update stuff & improve this list
#Phone
#Mobile Operating System
Graphene OS, it’s like android with additional settings & better security and without google … Fr it’s just like android but in better… Only thing that doesn’t work is google pay, but who cares, the rest works fine
you can:
- remove network permissions (completely) from apps
- have multiple user profiles
- no stupid google app lockdown lol, just install what you want
- auto reboots, auto wifi off, auto bt off, and a bunch of hardening options, making your phone wayyyyy more secure
#Apps (all free & open-source)
| App | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Organic Maps | Map App, works offline |
| Metrolist | basically yt music, but for free & without account |
| Feeder | RSS Reader |
| BreezyWeather | Weather App |
| Signal / Molly | Communication |
| AntennaPod | Podcasts (also entirely free …) |
| AnkiDroid | Anki flashcards (learning) |
| Tasks.org | Todolist (just disable networking, to be sure its 100% offline lol) |
| Thunderbird (K9-Mail) | Mails |
#PC
#OS
NixOS, its a reproductive linux, so basically you just have your one big config and then you can rebuild it super easily … also its atomic, so if you break sth you can just roll back on every boot
Also it uses Nix for packages, so basically you have access to the biggest linux pkg repo (bigger than the AUR) …
#Window Manager etc.
- Niri
- Noctalia Shell
Looks nice …, see my NixOS Showcase Image
#Programs
| Program | Purpose |
|---|---|
| FreeTube | Watch YT, without account, without ads & integrated sponsorblock |
| Anki | same as on mobile, learning flashcards |
| aerc | Mails in the terminal |
#Browser
Imo Brave is currently the best browser available. The only issue with it, is that its full of stupid bloat (e.g. crypto shit), on linux you can just use the origin version for free … on mobile its a few clicks to disable this stuff.
It has adblocking build in (turn it to aggressive, ususally i dont have problems with this setting …) & fingerprinting protection, which nowadays seems more and more important.
From security perspective, its build on Chromium, so you get the advantages of this … (firefox + arkenfox seems also somewhat okay, but the biggest issue i see with this is that the gecko engine, has from what i read so far way worse security measures, although recently catching up)
#Passwords
KeepassXC (and on mobile KeepassDX). It’s an offline open source password manager, offering everything one needs, browser extension, ssh agent integration etc.
The encryption used are modern secure standards and ideally the database lies only on your own disk.
If you wanna use sth online, then I currently would check out bitwarden (although I myself don’t use it …), its at least open source (that’s imo a minimum criterium for a password manager …, a closed source password manager is absolutely not trustworthy).

more stuff will be added here soon
